The Humble Hairy Woodpecker

The Humble Hairy Woodpecker

by Susan | Feb 13, 2021 | Bird Patterns, Tree Clinging Bird Patterns

The Hairy and Downy woodpeckers at my suet feeders bring such joy. I designed the Downy Woodpecker a few years ago. I’ve planned to create a Hairy Woodpecker for some time, but they are so similar to Downy Woodpeckers. How to make him different? In addition to...
The Tiny White Breasted Nuthatch

The Tiny White Breasted Nuthatch

by Susan | Nov 15, 2015 | Felt Patterns, Tree Clinging Bird Patterns

The tiny White Breasted Nuthatch is resident in the stand of maple woods here behind the house. I often see them hopping about as they scale the sides of trees – often upside down. Have fun creating this cute little bird. Right click here and select “Save...

The Rythmic Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker

by Susan | Oct 5, 2014 | Bird Patterns, Felt Patterns, Tree Clinging Bird Patterns

This yellow-bellied sapsucker first appeared on my drawing board this spring when he routinely performed a morning tattoo on an old television antennae. It took a rainy day for me to dust him off and finish him. Right click here and select “Save target as”...
The Gentle Northern Flicker

The Gentle Northern Flicker

by Susan | Jan 30, 2014 | Bird Patterns, Felt Patterns, Tree Clinging Bird Patterns

When readers suggested that I create a northern flicker, I didn’t know where to begin. Although they’re native to this neck of the woods, I’ve never seen one. With this pattern, you can make a yellow-shafted flicker, found in the east, or a...
Striking Red Headed Woodpecker

Striking Red Headed Woodpecker

by Susan | Feb 3, 2013 | Bird Patterns, Felt Patterns, Tree Clinging Bird Patterns

This Red Headed Woodpecker is so striking with its crimson head and checkerboard colors.   Lately I’ve heard a number of Woodpeckers at work, but they’re unlikely to be this pretty little bird. Right click here and select “Save target as” to...
The Iconic Pileated Woodpecker

The Iconic Pileated Woodpecker

by Susan | Jan 6, 2013 | Bird Patterns, Felt Patterns, Tree Clinging Bird Patterns

The Pileated Woodpecker, distinctive for its wild bright red cap, is possibly one of the most iconic birds thanks to the Woody Woodpecker cartoons. This bird, with its bold markings, is a perfect project for a snowy day! Right click here and selected “Save...
Spritely Little Nuthatch

Spritely Little Nuthatch

by Susan | Sep 28, 2012 | Bird Patterns, Felt Patterns, Tree Clinging Bird Patterns

I spent the day outside working with Paul. Together we cut trees to thin out the area around the pond. While I worked, a tiny little nuthatch energetically flitted in an out of the trees. The wood has been cut and stacked for burning in the wood boiler, but I...

Downy Woodpecker Felt Ornament

by Susan | Feb 19, 2012 | Bird Patterns, Felt Patterns, Tree Clinging Bird Patterns

On our walk through the woods yesterday the only bird we came across was our resident woodpecker. He gets the honor of being featured in my felt ornament collection. You can download the pattern here. I’d love to see your ornament. If you make him, post a...

The shop will be closed while I’m gone. I didn’t get advanced notice up, but I should be back in a week from Thursday.

I hung this solar lantern that no longer works (it used to be Mom’s) filled with scraps of wool from a rug hooking class. I’m hoping the birds will take bits and pieces to line their nests. It feels so hopeful. 😊

This afternoon I made some finials for my garden o This afternoon I made some finials for my garden obelisks. I’m lucky that Paul has all the tools. I had a stash of 2 x 2 wood lengths, the perfect size, left over from another project. I drew a very basic design and borrowed his bandsaw and belt sander for the project. They’re a little rough, but they make the obelisks look complete.
My project for the day was making these obelisks f My project for the day was making these obelisks for some climbers. Being somewhat geometrically challenged, I’m happy they’re together and are standing. Finials for the type will finished them off.
I’ve come a long way in the few decent days we’ve I’ve come a long way in the few decent days we’ve had over the last two weeks. A fifth new raised bed installed and filled. The soil from last year’s pots emptied, sifted, enhanced with compost, and back into pots. More than a dozen bags of soil and compost moved around. A gutter fixed after the snow ripped it off this winter and the rain barrels full again. Grass seed planted in the rough spot of the yard. A sad looking wood obelisk created. The next two should be smoother now that I know what I’m doing. All in all, I’m feeling accomplished with a body that feels a little achy-breaky tonight.

Yesterday was a stellar spring day Downeast. I spo Yesterday was a stellar spring day Downeast. I spotted these picture-perfect Canada geese poised on a rock a ways off the shore. I wandered over to some rocks to sit, watch them, and just take in the day. I chose the wrong spot. Mr. Goose took offense to my presence and launched off the rock and flew straight at me. All I could see was this beak and flapping wings barreling at me. I leaned back and tossed my foot into the air to ward it off. He landed a few feet to my left and hissed. Heart racing, I took that moment to move on and leave them in peace.
