Hannah has been spending time on Petfinder, dreaming of a day when she can have her own pup. She texted me a picture of a pup, and I looked but wasn’t inspired. Yet I dared to linger on Petfinder and scrolled to peek at the other pups. (Dangerous, I know!) And then I spotted this little girl.

Without saying anything to Paul, I submitted a painstakingly long adoption application. The next day, I received a message that the rescue group wanted to set up a virtual meet and greet. I had to fess up to Paul what I’d done. That conversation started with, “So, Sweetie, I did a thing.”

So, two days after applying, Paul, Hannah, and I met “Odalys” on a video chat with the rescue group (out of Mexico) and the foster mom (in Houston), and the three of us huddled around my iPad (with Gidget). She was such a little sweetie! They found her mama on the streets of Houston in poor shape and, thankfully, had her babies in foster care. She is a six-month-old Yorkie/Chihuahua (and possibly something more) mix.

We agreed on the spot to adopt her. This rescue group sends a critter transport to the northeast every three months – and they have one departing next week. They had closed this trip’s adoption but reconsidered when they received our application. She is delivery #23 out of 27 on a journey up the East Coast. Given the timing, I believe she was meant for us. Kismet, right?

Foster mom sent this picture while she was waiting for her check-up at the vet.

We’re in a perpetual name-brainstorming mode, as she doesn’t yet know her name. The anticipation of a new puppy may do me in. There’s so much to think about and plan for.

I must say, I’m a bit in awe of the people involved in the rescue group and transport. It’s not their first rodeo, and it appears to be a well-oiled machine fueled by women passionate about saving these animals and finding them good homes. I can’t even imagine what it’s like to travel for days, sleeping in a van with 26 dogs and one cat!

Oooh boy. I’m excited and nervous at the same time! There’s more to come in this story.

Now, how do I break the news to Gidget?

That face! I’m in love.
