While visiting my folks in Pennsylvania last week, Mom and I stopped at a farm stand. Amongst the gourds and pumpkins, they still had fresh, ripe tomatoes for sale. Their growing season is about a month behind ours and I was feeling a bit envious.

Until I got home and saw my ripe, red tomatoes.

Last month, after babying my bumper crop of tomatoes through a few frosts, I harvested the lot of them, green and red alike.

I experimented with putting the cherry and slicing tomatoes in boxes. I didn’t wrap them in newspaper or do anything special, but I did leave the vine and stem on whenever possible. After yesterday’s “harvest” I’ve now got two pints of cherry tomatoes in the fridge.

The box of slicing tomatoes were almost entirely ripe.

A little overwhelmed with tomatoes after I ran out of boxes in which to pack them, I abandoned the romas in the garden cart and hoped for the best. It’s fun to be enjoying fresh tomatoes this late in the season.

Needless to say, we’re pushing tomatoes at my house!
